The Hike

From the Elephant Rock Trailhead, follow the Elephant Rock Trail west toward the red rock formations next to the highway. Stay left at the junction with the Arrowhead Trail to start the loop. The Elephant Rock Trail turns southwest and passes between Elephant Rock and the highway, then parallels the highway until it comes out into more open terrain. The trail then turns northwest and crosses a small bridge. Just across the bridge the trail meets the Arrowhead Trail, where you’ll turn right to follow it to the north. As the trail approaches the base of the bluffs to the north, it turns right (east) and heads toward a pass north of Elephant Rock. After crossing the pass, where sections of the old auto road are badly eroded, the trail rounds the north side of Elephant Rock. Turn left at the trail junction to return to the Elephant Rock Trailhead.

The night sky is spectacular on a clear night from Valley of Fire, which is far enough from the lights of Las Vegas to keep the sky from being washed out. If you’re camping during the winter or spring, walk away from the campground lights in the evening and look for the following constellations. A star chart or a phone app such as Cosmic Watch or Sky Map will show the sky at the date and time you’re observing it, and help you get oriented.
